C.A. Carlo, Veteran Coal Miner, Dies
Charles A. Carlo 84, of 319 Pocahontas street, died at his home at 2:40 a.m. today. The son of Andrew and Charlotte Carlo, he was born April 27, 1857, in Scouroburg, Sweden. He came to this country in 1869, settling at Keokuk. Later he moved to Hynes where he lived 50 years. He has lived in Ottumwa for the past eight years. He was a member of the Pentecostal church. Mr. Carlo was a coal miner in Monroe and Mahaska county for many years, and is widely known among miners. He married Ada W. Lock September 22, 1882, at Ottumwa. She survives him. Also surviving are two sons, Sanfred and Alfred, both of Ottumwa, and four daughter. Mrs. Julia Benson, Mrs. Amelia Tillotson, Mrs. Nina Barnett and Mrs. Ada West of Ottumwa. In addition he is survived by 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Five sons preceded him in death. Short services will be held form the home at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and at 2:00 p.m. from the Pentecostal church. The Rev. A.D. McClure will be in charge. Burial will be in the Cuba cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The casket will be taken from Johnson's funeral chapel to the residence at 6 p.m.
