7-Year-Old Carlson Boy Sled Victim

Winter sports claimed its first Ottumwa victim of the season late Saturday afternoon when Jon Iver Carlson 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Iver Carlson, 333 North McLean street, died at Ottumwa hospital from injuries sustained in a sled accident. Pattie Carlson, 10 sister of the youth, sustained facial injuries and shock. She is a patient at Ottumwa hospital and this morning had not been informed of her brother's death. Jon suffered skull injuries which caused his death on the hospital operating table where surgeons were endeavoring to relieve pressure on his brain. The children were sliding in a ravine across the street from the Carlson home. Both were riding the same sled when it crashed into a tree. The girl is reported recovering. Jon was born in Ottumwa August 18, 1933 and had lived here throughout his life, He was a pupil of the second grade at the Douglas school. Surviving are his parents, sister, Patti; brother Bobby Jo, all at home, and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. John R. Carlson of Ottumwa and Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Booth of Gary, Indiana. Services were held today at 2 p.m. in Lester Jay funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Richard Graebel, pastor of the First Presbyterian church and the Rev. Malvin H. Lundeen pastor of the First Lutheran church. Burial will be in the Ottumwa cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Jackie Swanson, Dickie Krafka, Gene Winpigler, Henry Johnson, Max Murtin and Billy Pierce.
