Adel Estes, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Estes; was born in Batavia May 1, 1891 and died by drowning at Diamondville, Wyoming; Aug. 7, 1904.

Adel was a bright boy and the constant companion of his father. He was of a kindly disposition; ever ready to help the distressed; his ministrations extending to dumb animals. A short time before his death he had rescued a little lamb from drowning; feeding and caring for it until it had learned his call and would come to him at once.

On the morning of August 7, he had taken from the river some kittens, placed there for the purpose of drowning and carried them home to a place of safety. Afterward he had returned to the river; where with some companions; he was going in bathing. He was the first in the water and almost immediately was seized with cramps.

He was drowned before his companions could go to his rescue. Adel is survived by his parents and six brothers and sisters; Virgil, Edith, Lucille, Cecil. Theodore and Virgil.

The family has the sympathy of their many friends in Ottumwa in their hour of sorrow. The funeral services were conducted from the West End Presbyterian church from the West End Thursday afternoon with the Rev. J.W. Foote of Fairfield officiating. Internment was made in the Garrison Rock cemetery.
