Retired Barber Tom Chance Dies

Thomas W. Chance, 86, of 425 N. Weller died Thursday at 8:15 p.m. at Elsie’s Nursing Home after several months illness.

He had been a barber on Church Street for 50 years prior to retiring in 1940.

Born Oct. 16, 1874, in Wapello County, he was the son of John J. and Malissa Elkins Chance. He had been a resident of Wapello County and Ottumwa all his life.

Mr. Chance was a past noble grand and long-time secretary of Pickwick Lodge No. 129, I.O.O.F.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ceora Fessenden of Washingon, D.C., and Mrs. Evelyn Meadows and Mrs. Alberta Chadwick of Ottumwa; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, C.B. Chance, A.D. Chance and E.J. Chance, and a sister, Mrs. Ada Smith, all of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died Feb. 17, 1939, two brothers and three sisters.

The service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Chapel with Rev. B.A. Johansen of the Bethany Baptist Church in charge. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews.
