Ottumwa Tri Weekly Courier February 14, 1911

Mrs. Emily Painter, wife of Captain R. M. Painter and sister of J. T. Hackworth of Ottumwa, died at her home in Sand Creek township, Kansas, January 31, 1911 of pneumonia. Mrs. Painter was born in Wapello County, Iowa in October, 1845 and was married to H. M. Painter January 1, 1870 at Versailles, Ill. Their first home was in Iowa. Later they moved to Colorado and in 1884 they moved to their present home in Meade County, Kansas. Mrs. Painter was the mother of seven children. One died in infancy and another William H. Painter, was killed in the Philippine war. The others, Mrs. Mary Rodgers, Mrs. Ed Desmarias, Miss Emily, John and Miss Sue survive to comfort their hear-broken father. Mrs. Painter was an ideal wife and mother she was a constant inspiration to her husband and children who will cherish her memory as the embodiment of love and devotion. Mrs. Painter was a most hospital friend in fact her life was an example of Christian virtues. She united with the M. E. church at an early age. She kept the faith and fought a good fight until she was called to her reward Tuesday. Everybody loved Mrs. Painter and she will be mourned by all who know her. The family have the deepest sympathy of the community. A short funeral service was held at the home Thursday morning February 2 at 9 o'clock, where many friends gathered to pay their last respects to a true and kind neighbor and friend. At 2 p. m. the regular services were held at the grave in Graceland cemetery, where friends assembled around the tomb to witness the last sad rites of one they dearly loved. Interment was made by the side of her soldier boy who preceded her to the Silent Land ten years ago and mother and son are now again united in that "home not made with hands." Truly a good woman, a most excellent wife and mother—one who was a shining example of Christian virtues, has gone.—The Meade (Kansas) Globe.
