Retired Morrell Veteran Is Dead
A. P. Murphy, 66 Succumbs Tuesday Afternoon After An Extended Illness.
For 42 years an employee of John Morrell & Co., A. P. Murphy, 66, of 74 Chester Ave., died Tuesday at 4:55 PM after an illness of two years. Murphy retired from the Morrell purchasing department March, 1934, because of illness. Prior to that time he had been in that Department 33 years. Before that he was head bookkeeper at the Ottumwa plant. He was born January 1, 1870 in Franklin, the son of John and Elizabeth Murphy. As a youth he moved with his parents to Warsaw, Illinois, where he was educated. He came to Ottumwa in 1892 and was married to Charlotte Hanks here May 2, 1897. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Ethel and Mary Murphy of Ottumwa, and two sons, H. H. of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Dr. Kenneth Murphy of Ottumwa. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at the First Congregational church at 3:30 PM conducted by the Rev. David Crockett. Burial will be made in the Ottumwa cemetery. Pallbearers will be C. E. Elliott, A. G. Anderson, Clarence Reedquist, Walter McLean, Roi Phillippe, and Carl Anderson.
