Swope dies in Ottumwa

C. Raymond Swope, 78, father of Del Reice Van Winkle of Fairfield, died Wednesday at the Ottumwa Hospital. A resident of Ottumwa, he made his home at 202 N. Fellows.

Services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ottumwa with the pastor, the Rev. Robert Lehman, officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. Bob Barker of Hope Lutheran Church, Germanville.

Visitation will be held tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the Shrine of Memories Funeral Chapel in Ottumwa. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Swope was born Jan. 26, 1905 in Wapello County, the son of John and Lillian Gates Swope. He was married Oct. 27, 1926 to Opal Freeman, who preceded him in death. He was married June 2, 1963 to Francis Dyson, who survives.

A retired Morrell employee, Swope was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife and four sons: Darrell, Floris; DeVern, Perrysburg, Ohio; Doyle, Oskaloosa; and David, North Liberty.

Other survivors are a sister, Pauline Collier, Ottumwa; two step-daughters, June Ward, Omaha, and Ruth Lathrop, Escondido, Calif.; 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
