Firemen Fail To Save Life of Dora Belle Berrier
Fourteen months old Dora Bell Berrier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Berrier, 234 N. Weller St., died of drowning late Saturday when she toppled into boiler water in which her mother had done the washing a short time before. The child was playing alone in the backyard at the Berrier home when the tragedy occurred. Apparently no one saw the fatal accident and it could not be determined how long the child's body had been in the water. The mother was the first to discover the little girl lying face down in the tub. Fireman worked nearly an hour with the inhalator in a desperate attempt to save the babies life but were unsuccessful. The call for help reach the fire station of 5:25 PM. The child's father is employed at the County engineer's office. He is also corporal in troop E. 113th cavalry, Iowa National Guard. Besides her parents the baby is survived by a brother, Henry LaVon, two sisters, Deleth and Betty Jean; and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Berrier Sr. of Ottumwa. Funeral services will be at 2 PM Thursday at Johnson's funeral Chapel. The Rev. Gordon Dale Cox will officiate and burial will be in the Shaul cemetery.
