M. J. Canny, Rail Engineer, Dies
Member Of Well-known Family Here Had Been Employed By Burlington 46 Years.
Michael J. Canny, 68, C. B. & Q. Engineer, died at his home 620 N. Copper Ave., at 8:20 PM Wednesday. Mr. Canny been employed by the Burlington railroad for the last 46 years, 36 of them as an engineer. He was born November 2, 1867 in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, the son of Patrick and Margaret Canny. The Canny family moved to Ottumwa in 1887, where three years later on April 19, he entered Burlington service as a fireman. On February 8, 1900 he was promoted to engineer. He was a member of the brotherhood of locomotive engineers and a fourth degree of the Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name society and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Surviving are one brother, A. P. Canny, Ottumwa; one sister, Mrs. Frances Kitterman, North Long Beach, California; 15 nephews, Charles A., Ed P., Michael E., Charles P., Daniel J., Patrick F., James M, Anthony P. and Joseph P. Canny all of Ottumwa. John M. Canny of Madison, Wisconsin, Michael Rotary of Whittier, California, Edward B. and Robert E. Canny of Chicago, Illinois, and William and Charles Kitterman, both of Long Beach, California, and six nieces, Mrs. Catharine Stroud of Ottumwa, Mrs. Margaret Muchow, the Misses Mary, Margaret and Theresa Canny, all of Chicago and Miss Mary Rotary of Whittier, California. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 AM Saturday at the home, and at 9 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. J. H. Courtney will celebrate the mass. Burial be in the Calvary cemetery. The Knights of Columbus General Shields Council No. 888, will meet at the K. of C. home and 8 PM today and to go to the home and say the Rosary. Nephews will be pallbearers.
