Direct Sales Head Dies Here
H. R. Filkins Has Heart Attack In Hotel Room; Was Mid-continent Employee.
H. R. Filkins, 44, local district salesman for the Mid-continent Petroleum Corp., died of a heart attack about 1 PM Sunday at his room at Hotel Ottumwa, where he and Mrs. Filkins had been living since they came to Ottumwa January. Two physicians were summoned and the inhalator was brought from the central fire station on Market Street an effort to save Filkins’ life. Operating the inhalator were Chief Bernard A. Meany, Basil Fry, Henry L. Cudworth and George Kraft. Authorities of the Filkins’ company here said that he was in charge of the bulk stations of the petroleum firm at Ottumwa, Fairfield, Keosauqua, Brighton and Bloomfield. He came here from Davenport where he had also been connected with the company. He was a member of various Masonic lodges, including the Shrine at St. Paul and Consistory at Winona, Minnesota. The body was removed to the Lester Jay funeral home.
