Herman Merrill, Long A Prominent Ottumwan, Dies At Home Friday
Herman W. Merrill, 77, 401 N. Green St., prominent citizen and businessman who was brought to Ottumwa as an infant in 1858, died at his home at 10 PM Friday after a three-day illness of heart trouble. Mr. Merrill had for years been connected with various business enterprises in Ottumwa. The last active business in which he was engaged was the Phoenix Trust Co. He had been in poor health for several years. Shortly after he graduated from Ottumwa high school and had attended the University of Iowa for one year, he became associated with his father in the Merrill Wholesale grocery house until its end in 1901. Later he became interested in the Ottumwa Pickle (sp) Co. as a partner of P. H. Crowley. He was director of the old Iowa National Bank and of the Phoenix Trust company. Mr. Merrill was the son of Joseph Henry Merrill, a native of Plymouth, New Hampshire, and Garaphelia Durham Merrill, and was born in Mount Pleasant, January 15, 1858. On October 4, 1881 he was married to Miss Emily C. Temple, who died a number of years ago. At the time of his birth, Mount Pleasant was the end of the Burlington railway lines.
