Charles E. CASS was born in St. Louis, Missouri, October 25, 1835 and died at his home in Ottumwa Dec. 16, aged 78 years one month and 25 days. The remains were brought here and the funeral was held at the home of G. G. BOTTORFF, west of town, conducted by Rev. A. B. HIGHTSHOE, pastor of the Hedrick Methodist church. Burial was in the Brooks cemetery.

Mr. CASS came to Ottumwa in 1863 and established himself in the grocery business, in which he was engaged until some 25 years ago, when his health failed to such an extent that he was compelled to give up his business.

His home was in Ottumwa since the time he first came there except three years which were spent in California.

He was married to Miss Jane W. SINCLAIR in Ottumwa June 6, 1878, and to this union two daughters were born, Ulta, who with her mother is left to mourn the loss of their father and husband, and Ora, who was laid to rest just three months before her father.
