Died: November 15, 1974
John Charles Davis Sr., 78, of 429 North Clay, died today at 7 a.m. at Veteran’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He had been in failing health since September. He was born May 22, 1896 in Chillicothe, Mo., the son of Evan R. and Bridget McNamara Davis. A resident of Ottumwa most of his life, he was a retired Ottumwa mail carrier and a World War I veteran with the Army Ambulance Corps. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the American Legion and World War I Vets Barracks 1510. He married Elsie Bruder in 1917 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Surviving are two sons, John Jr. of Cedar Rapids and Paul of Palatine, Illinois; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one brother, Jim of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his wife and four brothers.
Davis Service The service for John C. Davis Sr., 78, of 429 Clay, who died Friday, will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Reverend Thomas Stratman celebrating a Requiem Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Walter B. Schafer Post 775 officiating. The Rosary will be recited Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Jay Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be William Davis, Norbert Davis, Henry Berrier, and Joe Winston, John E. Davis and Robert J. Davis. He was a member of the American Legion, World War I Vets Barracks 1510 and was a past commander and fourth district commander for the VFW.
