Wayne Gerald Counterman, 78, of 700 W. Alta Vista Ave., died March 27, 2009, at his home.

He was born June 18, 1930, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Wayne C. and Mary Jane Albertson Counterman. He married Beverly Selix Feb. 9, 1952. She preceded him in death Sept. 13, 2005. She was the love of his life.

While in high school he worked at Jacquinot Grocery. A graduate from Ottumwa High School in 1948, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at John Morrell and Co. until 1973, then in the Ottumwa School System, retiring in 1991.Wayne loved spending time with family and friends. It was always special to watch Wayne and Beverly dance. It was magical. He loved spending time with the kids when they were young. He also loved having fish frys inviting all of his friends.He was a member of Masonic Lodge #269 AF and AM, KAABA Shrine, O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. He coached numerous youth in the Midwest Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball teams. He loved pitching softball for the Jacquinot Grocery and the Ottumwa Ads. He was an avid fisherman. In his younger years, he loved to golf, bowl and hunt.

Surviving are three children, Martin "Marty" (Sue) Counterman of Ottumwa, Kim (Bill) Ardueser of Ottumwa and Amy (Steve) Heinrichs of Norwalk; seven grandchildren, Toni and Traci Counterman, Clint Ammenhauser, Andy and Jillanne Ardueser, all of Ottumwa, Scott and Tyler Heinrichs of Norwalk; three great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Shayla and Taylar; and an uncle, Bill Kielkopf of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather and mother, Louis and Mary Jane White.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Joe Selix officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
