OTTUMWA — Barbara Haw, 80, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at St. John's Lutheran Ministries in Billings, Mont., having succumbed to ALS.Barb was born July 19, 1929, to Leroy and Elizabeth Goiens in Des Moines, Iowa. She grew up in Ottumwa, Iowa, and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, with a BA in primary education.Right after graduating, Barbara married her high school sweetheart, Stan Haw, on June 17, 1951, in Ottumwa, Iowa. Barb taught kindergarten in Knoxville, Iowa, while Stan finished out his military service in post-war Germany. In 1955, Barb and Stan moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa, where Stan operated a retail hardware store and Barb became a mother of four sons. In 1963, the family moved to St. Xavier. While Stan raised Black Angus cattle, Barb taught first grade at Fort Smith. Later, they moved to Billings and from 1972 to 1981, Barbara taught at Highland Elementary. During the 1980s, Barb and Stan moved to El Paso, Texas, where Barb taught at Emmanuel Baptist Christian School. After retirement, they moved back to Billings in 1996.Barbara is preceded in death by Stan; her parents; and grandson Houston James Haw.Barb is survived by her four sons, Chris (Tanja) of Las Vegas, Craig (Holly) of Faribault, Minn., Jim (Kathy) of Billings and Brian (Karri) of Helena. She has 10 living grandchildren, Jennifer (Dustin) Mobley, Heather (Jared) Kirkpatrick, Travis, Vuk, Ashley, Alexandra, Heidi, Holly, Hayley and Herman Haw; and four great-grandchildren, Hudson and Kennedy Mobley and Nathan and Hannah Kirkpatrick.Barbara loved her sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many close friends. She was a great organizer and a wonderful teacher. One of Barb's many passions was square dancing with her beloved husband. Together, they also shared a passion for service to their church and the Lord.Special thanks for the wonderful care provided to our mother by the staff at St. John's.Memorial services will be held Friday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Billings, Mont.
