Aged Pioneer Answers Call;
John Adam Schworm Died Unexpectedly Last Night--One of Oldest Masons

The grim reaper removed one of Wapello county’s most highly respected pioneers last night at 11:45 o’clock when John Adam Schworm died unexpectedly at his home on Gower Street. Death claimed this esteemed citizen at the age of 73 years after an illness of several months. Death resulted from heart trouble. The passing of this venerable man is ______ with deep sorrow by all, especially by the older residents of Ottumwa by whom he was more intimately known and with whom he was associated for many years past. The deceased has lived in this city for fifty-five years, coming here from Burlington in 1856. For many years he conducted a general store located upon the site of the present Phillips Big Store building.

Mr. Schworm was born in Germany, March 13, 1833, and came to America when a small boy. For a time he resided in Buffalo, N.Y., but later moved to Burlington and thence to Ottumwa. Mr. Schworm is one of the oldest Masons of the city having affiliated with that order not many years after his arrival here.

He leaves a wife and ten children to mourn his loss. Fred and Edward A., at home; Adolph, Salt Lake City; John, Ottumwa; Mrs. John Weimer, Omaha, Neb; Mrs. John Dittman; Mrs. Bert Fletcher, Mrs. Bert Green of Ottumwa; Paul, Omaha Neb; and Mrs. John Kuyk, Ottumwa.

The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dittman, 1701 East Main street, conducted by Rev. W. H. Hormel, pastor of the East End Presbyterian church. The Masons will have charge of the services at the grave. Interment will be made in the Ottumwa cemetery.
