OTTUMWA — Ellen Hiatt, 83, formerly of 700 W. Alta Vista Ave., died at 9:30 p.m. Oct. 10, 2008 at Lutheran Homes Society in Muscatine. She was born Dec. 18, 1924 in Virginia, Minn. to Philip and Gladys Whitfield Blake. She married Wallace B. Hiatt Dec. 30, 1972. He preceded her in death Dec. 19, 1977.She was a graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1942 and Iowa Success School. She had been a home health care provider and loved helping elderly in need. She was known at the nursing home as the Grandma with the prettiest blue eyes and smile. She was a member of Ottumwa Regional Health Center Auxiliary, BPO Elks Lodge No. 347 Auxiliary, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 114 Auxiliary, and O.B. Nelson Unit No. 3 American Legion Auxiliary, Agency T.O.P.S. IA No. 864, Agency Chapter TTT and Agency United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Wally owned and operated Red Carpet Restaurant and Lounge for many years. They also bred and raised Doberman pinchers for years but had a special place in her heart for Tipper, her cat and her Doberman, Missy. Surviving are three daughters, Linda (Gary) Knorr of North Liberty, Debi (Tom) Blew and Sue Dimmitt both of Ottumwa and a son, Bob (Pat) Dimmitt of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Donna (Bob) Shelquist and Barbara Jean Hughes both of Tucson, Ariz.; and a brother, Darryl Blake. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Philip Blake Jr. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Dvorak officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery.Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today with family present from 5-7 p.m. this evening. Memorials may be made to the Special Care Unit at Lutheran Homes Society 2421 Lutheran Drive, Muscatine, IA 52761.
