OTTUMWA — Monroe John Dodson, 69, of 173 N. Moore, died at 7:20 a.m. Aug. 11, 2008 at Ridgewood Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born Jan. 16, 1939 in Derby, Iowa, to Monroe and Margaret Sights Dodson.A resident of Ottumwa most of his life, he served in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.He had worked at John Deere Ottumwa Works, Pella Corp., and owned and operated J.D. Construction.He was a member of the Pony Express and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.He loved to hunt and fish, was an avid mushroom hunter, he loved to play cards and was amazing at woodworking.

Surviving is his companion of 30 years, Marjorie Hooten; his children, John (Kim) Dodson of Ottumwa, Cheryl (Mike) Fabulae of Kansas City, Mo.; stepchildren, Pam (Mike) Parks and Randy (Marsha) Hooten both of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marylin Rainey of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and Mary Jones of St. Petersburg, Fla.He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Nancy Willa Dodson and a brother, Ruby Wilkie Dodson.Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
