OTTUMWA — Doris McDowell, 93, formerly of 119 N. Elm St., died July 26, 2008 at Ottumwa Manor.

She was born May 23, 1915 in Appanoose County to Clyde and Cora Strunk Smith. She married Ralph W. Hanna March 14, 1934. He preceded her in death June 4, 1962. She married James L. McDowell June 14, 1969. He preceded her in death June 25, 1988.

A graduate of Unionville High School in 1933, she worked for W.T. Grant from 1947 to 1955, and for J.C. Penney’s from 1955 to 1972. After her retirement, she worked at north Hy-Vee distributing food samples. She was a charter member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Surviving is a daughter, Charlotte Bride of Ottumwa; two stepsons, Robert McDowell of Denton, Texas, and James McDowell of Omaha, Neb.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jenevieve Long of Keosauqua and Fredia Stubbs of Ottumwa; and a brother, Glen Smith of Corydon.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Hannah; two sisters, Leila Herman and Mildred Houk; and a brother, Dwight Smith.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bethany Baptist Church with Joe Selix officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa, 118 E. Jackson St., Centerville, Iowa
