Elizabeth R. "Bette" Bailey
OTTUMWA — Elizabeth “Bette” R. Bailey, 86, formerly of 315 N. Ferry St., and for the past 10 months at Prairie Hills Assisted Living, passed away at 1:37 p.m. July 18, 2008 at Hospice House.She was born Dec. 14, 1921 in Ottumwa to Alonzo and Estella Hatfield Walker. She married Robert M. Bailey June 6, 1942 and in their union they had two children, Sharon and Ron. He preceded her in death March 28, 1960.A resident of Ottumwa her whole life, while raising her two children, she worked at the Ottumwa Hospital snack bar, A and W Restaurant, and she worked for 10 years at South Hy-Vee Deli, where she retired in 1986. Later she worked for the Ottumwa Community Schools as a lunch server at several places including Agassiz and Horace Mann. She was a member of Trinity Church of the Nazarene where she participated in many activities that she enjoyed including being a greeter for many years. She was very close with her church family and her Sunday lunch pals. Bette’s family was her pride and joy and she really enjoyed attending her grandchildren and her great-granddaughters’ many activities. Surviving is a daughter, Sharon (Larry) Wright of Ottumwa; a son, Ronald (Carolyn) Bailey of Ottumwa; five grandchildren, Cindi (Kurt) Gates and Christy Schreiner of Ottumwa, Teresa Wright of Tulsa, Okla., Trent (Kelly) Bailey of Keller, Texas, and Trena (John) Hazelwood of Ottumwa; and five great-granddaughters, Kelly Gates, Paige and Kaleigh Schreiner of Ottumwa, Madison and Taylor Bailey of Keller, Texas.She was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Robert Max Bailey; four brothers, Don, Bill, Kenneth Walker and an infant brother Robert Walker and a sister, Rosemary Leek.Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today at Trinity Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Eugene Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Agency Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Church of the Nazarene or Hospice, 312 E. Alta Vista, Ottumwa, IA 52501
