John Huston

HUSTON, MEANY, SCULLY

John Huston, Publisher of the Courier for 29 years and an employee of the newspaper since 1897; died at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. Huston suffered a heart attack the night of May 17th at his home 209 West Maple Avenue. He was taken to the hospital later that night. Mrs. Huston and their daughter and son; Mrs. George Scully of Waterloo and Bernard J. Huston were at his bedside when the end came.

The veteran newspaper man had been in ill health the past six years, but had carried on his duties of directing the newspaper. In the past year he had been away from the office several times but kept in close touch with the operations.

On his last day of work May 17th, he seemed especially well, and discussed a variety of business matters with various matters of the paper's staff. The heart attack came after he retired that night. Since then he had been in a serious condition. Several times death had appeared near, but each time he rallied. He gradually became weaker, however. He slipped into a coma Monday night.

MARRIED 48 YEARS
Mr. Huston was married Aug. 24th 1909 to Miss Rose Ella Meany in Ottumwa.

Besides the widow, daughter, and son; Mr. Huston is survived by six grandchildren: Bernard K., John, Ann and Jane Huston of Ottumwa and George and Mary Jo Scully of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by six brothers; Tom, Chris, Henry, and Matthew and two who died infancy.

FUNERAL FRIDAY
Funeral services will be Friday morning at 9:30 at Traul funeral home, and at 10 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic church where a solemn high mass will be celebrated. Officers will be the Rev. Michael J. Rogers; celebant, the Rev. J.J. Collins deacon, the Rev. L.J. Leonhorst, subdeacon, and Paul Bremhorst, mastor of ceremonies. The ret. Rev. Msg. W.A. Collinan pastor will deliver the ceremony. The choir will be under direction of Sister Mary St. John of Ottumwa Heights College. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John Canny of Madison, Wisc., Edward Keefe of La Crosse, Wisc., and Edward Mill of Davenport; all former circulation managers of the courier and William C. Powell, Frank W. Hyatt Jr., and William J. Treneman of the Courier staff. Honorary pallbearers will be publishers of the Lee group of newspapers.

There will be a rosary service thursday night at 8 O'Clock at Traul funeral home, Members of General Shields Council No. 888 of the Knights of Columbus will meet at the Council home at 7:30 and will go in a body to the funeral home.

Courier employees today established a memorial fund in the honor of Mr. Huston. It will go to St. Joseph's hospitals building fund.
