OTTUMWA — Barry Steve Houk, 65, of 1749 Mable, died at 9:07 a.m. April 11, 2008, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.He was born Sept. 7, 1942 in Ottumwa to Olin and Blanche Sparks Houk.

He married Nancy Kelly June 9, 1979 in Ottumwa.A resident of Ottumwa all of his life, he served with the U.S. Marines from 1959 to 1963 in Okinawa, Japan. He worked at John Morrell and Co. until the plant closed in 1973, and then he was a business agent for labor Union Local 566, retiring in 1998. He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed cooking for his family.

Surviving is his wife, Nancy; four sons, Stevie (Rachel) Houk Jr., Bobby (Bobbi Jo) Houk, Mike Wilt, all of Ottumwa, and Rusty (Deana) Houk of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Sherry (Michael) Young of Ottumwa; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Gary (Avis) Houk of Ottumwa; two sisters, Kay Jordan and Vicki (Terry) Wright, both of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Connie Lewis; and a brother, DeVerne Houk.Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Dvorak officiating. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Cremation will follow the services.Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Monday with the family present from 6 to 7:30 p.m.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
