Courtesy of the Ottumwa CourierOTTUMWA — Robert “Sonny” “Bob” Gard, 74, of 440 Herrman, died at 1 p.m. Feb. 14, 2008, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
He was born Nov. 10, 1933 in Ottumwa to Earl “Tuffy” and Lela Scott Gard. He married Sharon Graham Nov. 6, 1982 in Eddyville.
After serving in the Army from 1952 to 1956 as a marine hull repairman, he worked as a furniture repairman for McGregor’s Furniture for 40 years. He was a member and past president of Izaak Walton League, and was also a member of the NRA and SISSI Club. He was a hunting safety instructor for 25 years and had been a Boy Scout Troop leader.
Surviving is his wife, Sharon; three sons Dan (Tina) Gard, Dustin Gard and Joe (Chelsea) Gard all of Ottumwa; three daughters, Barb (Rick) Richmond and Sally (Scott) Couch both of Eddyville, Trisha (Dennis) Rupe of Floris; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Gard of Ottumwa; two sisters, Bea Nicoletto and Betty Lee, both of Ottumwa; several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Tami Collett; and a great-granddaughter, Emma VanderBeek.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Sherri Arnold officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Monday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and also one hour prior to the service.A memorial has been established to the Boy Scouts of America.
