OTTUMWA – Michael L. “Fat Mike” Babberl, 55, of 625 N. Jefferson St., died at 4:13 p.m. December 14, 2007 as a result of fire at his home.

He was born June 30, 1952 in Osceola to Marvel John and Dorothy Bailey Babberl. He married Virginia Nichols on June 28, 1975.

A graduate of Ottumwa High School and Buena Vista College in accounting, he had served with the Army in Vietnam.

He enjoyed making leather products, reading, watching TV and spending time with his cats.

Surviving is his wife, Virginia; two sons, Shawn (Sarah) Babberl of Marshalltown, Brad Babberl of Ottumwa; a daughter Selena Babberl of Bethany, Okla.; his parents, Marvel and Dorothy Babberl of Des Moines; five sisters, Pat Remington of Brighton, Kathy Babberl of Chariton, Pam Mogensen of Dickson, Tenn., Cindy Nation and Kim Babberl both of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents. His body has been cremated. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Miller officiating. Military services will be performed by O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Family visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
