Carl Eugene “Gene” Orman, 73, of 13670 65th St., died Dec. 10, 2006, at home.

He was born Jan. 16, 1933 in Davis County to Oscar and Bernice McCarty Orman. He married Betty Jane Whisler Aug. 4, 1951 in Ottumwa.

A resident of Ottumwa all of his adult life, he was a self-employed carpenter, having built over 100 homes in the Ottumwa area.

He played guitar with friends, entertaining at area nursing homes playing country music. On the first Monday of each month, he played in Chillicothe to benefit Hospice. He enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Pitch player. He also enjoyed the antics of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving is his wife, Betty; a son, Larry Orman of Ottumwa; a daughter, Pam Evans of Ottumwa; four grandchildren, P.J. Evans and Shad Evans both of Ottumwa, Eric Orman of Waterloo, Sarah O’Brien of Ottumwa; three great-grandchildren, Brody, Tyler and Andrew; an honorary granddaughter, Kaleigh; two brothers, Dean and Jerry Black both of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Rick and James Dean Orman; a grandson, Jamie Orman; a great-grandson, Gage Evans; his parents; two brothers, Darrell and Don Black and a sister, Arbitena Black.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Hornback officiating. Cremation will follow the services.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity or Hospice, 312 E. Alta Vista, Ottumwa, Iowa 52501.
