OTTUMWA::WILLIAM J. "BILL" SMITHART 75 of Ottumwa,Iowa died at 9:38 pm October 09, 2001 in Ottumwa Regional health Center.

He was born July 21, 1926 in Ottumwa,Iowa to WILLIAM E. and PAULINE VAN BUSKIRK SMITHART. He married VIVIAN BALES January 20, 1948.

A lifetime resident of Ottumwa,Iowa he was with the Ottumwa Police Department for 20 years, retiring in 1981. For the last 15 years he drove a school bus for Southern Iowa Transit. He was a member of the Wapello County Chapter of the American Red Cross, for which he taught CPR and was one of the first instructors in the state.

Surviving are his wife; a son MICHAEL of Fuquay, NC; 2 daughters; JULIA SMITHART and REBECCA SMITHART of Ottumwa,Iowa; four grandchildren and 2 g-grandchildren.

The service will be 10 am Saturday, October 13, in Reece Funeral Home, the Reverand Lloyd OSBORN and Marion McCOY officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Ottumwa Police Department and Southern Transit Drivers.

Visitation will be 10 am today, Friday, with family present 7-8:30 pm.

Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross of the Ottumwa Police Department Association.
