I have a letter which was written from an Iowa Mort to his sister Nancy Mort McCloskey of Elk Lick Township, Somerset County Pennsylvania in 1866. The Morts in Iowa were also also related to Elizabeth Mort Howieson who married John Howieson at Sandpatch, PA in 1855. I also have a letter from Elizabeth Mort to Alice McCloskey Tipton telling of the death of her son Alexander Howieson in a coal mining accident in December 1895. Nancy and Elizabeth Mort's parents and sibling left Somerset County and moved to Van Buren County Iowa in the early 1830s. They originally came to Somerset County, PA from Frederick County Maryland in the 1820s.
