I have been searching for information about my Tannahill family that lived in Van Buren Co., IA from the late 1840's until the death of Charlotte Bucey in 1934. I've had very little luck finding any real information that would give me a better understanding of the family. My great-great grandfather, John Lyons Tannahill was born in OH on 9 Feb 1840 to Polly Mary Fillinger and probably Frank Tannehill. I have no proof of the father or mother's name. John Lyons Tannahill married Elmira Jones, (daughter of Hulda Harrington & Henry Valentine Jones) on 27 Dec 1866 in Chequist Twp, Van Buren Co., IA. They left IA in the early 1870's for Chautauqua Co., KS. John Lyons Tannahill died on 19 Apr 1873, just 9 days before his youngest son, John Lyons Tannahill was born on 28 Apr 1873. John Lyons Tannahill II, was my great-grandfather.
Mary Fillinger and Frank Tannahill had the following children that I know about:
Elizabeth b. 11/4/1836 d. 11/29/1861
William H. b. 1/15/1838 d.7/8/1889
John Lyons b. 2/9/1840 d. 4/19/1873
Henry F. b. 9/1/1841 d. 12/8/1864
Eliza E. b. 5/1845 d.aft 1920
M. Anna b. 1/8/1847 d. 9/16/1859
Charlotte b. 1/13/1848 d. 3/17/1934
Frances Marion b. 9/4/1849 d. 6/15/1889The only children that I am aware that married were John Lyons Tannahill (4 children - 3 survived to adulthood - Samuel O., George W. , John L.) Eliza E. m. Thornton (One son - William E. b. 9/1881 d. ?) Charlotte m. Orange Bucey and had William H. b.1864 d.1866, George Edmund b. 1868 d. 1906, & Henry b. 12/1873 d. 1940) As far as I know, only one of the grandchildren of Polly Mary Fillinger Tannahill had any further descendants, and that was John Lyons Tannahill - II...which includes my family and they are many. Most of this family is buried in Passmore Cemetery and lived in Village Twp. Even though Henry F. and John L. are listed on the graves in Passmore, they are not buried there. John L. is in El Cado Rural Cemetery, Rural Peru, KS, and Henry F. is in the National Cemetery Ft. McPherson, NE. He died of some sort of disease at Fort Cottonwood, NE. Both Henry and John L. were members of the Co C, 7th Calvary, Iowa, Civil War. If anyone has any information about these families, I would love to hear from them. I have pieced together quite a bit of information, but would definitely like more. My next step is to get Charlotte Tannahill Bucey's death record in hopes that it will list her father's name. The name that I have is based on some somewhat shaky research that I would like to verify. Thank you!
