Hi Donna -
To locate the farm, I searched the "U.S., Indexed County Land Ownership Maps, 1860-1918" database at Ancestry.com http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?htx=List&dbid=1127 for the surname Sanford, and the first search result brought up an 1897 plat map for Lick Creek (Van Buren Co., Iowa), with Benjamin Sanford's property highlighted. (Check the link at the bottom of this post; I put a jpg of the map in my Dropbox.)
If you want to contact the current property owners to ask if you could visit, you can use the Van Buren County Assessor's public information database http://vanburen.iowaassessors.com/search.php to look them up.
You might also like the free online tool that -- in conjunction with Google Earth -- will show you the location of a piece of property based on township and range. It's called Earth Point, and you can find it at http://www.earthpoint.us/TownshipsSearchByDescription.aspx
As an aside, the 1897 Plat Book of Van Buren County has been digitized as part of the Iowa Digital Library, and is freely available online at http://digital.lib.uiowa.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/atlases/id/4511, and heaps more historical atlases and maps can be viewed (even without purchasing) at http://www.historicmapworks.com/Browse/United_States/Iowa/Page/78/
Best wishes,
Joy
