Searching for a homestead

My great, great grandfather, Benjamin F. Sanford Jr. purchased the John Ryan farm in about 1857 located about 5 miles southwest of Birmingham, Iowa. This became the Sanford farm for many, many years. My grandfather Grover Leland Sanford and my father Grover Merle Sanford were both born on the farm. I would very much like to visit Douds and hopefully see this property and perhaps the Leando school my father attended. Any ideas on how I can find someone who may know this property or maps available for me to find this area. Thank you so much for any information.
