There is not a river that shares a border between Van Buren and Davis counties.

I'm sure I've seen an old, old census where the abbreviation for Indiana used was IA, the same as later used for Iowa.

Try a Google search with the following in the search window.

"Mauk's Ferry" -ia -iowa

You'll find reference to a Mauk's Ferry.

Perhaps not your Mauk's Ferry but thought I'd toss out the idea.
