The Timothy Day that married Elizabeth Edwards was Timothy Day, Jr. His first wife was Elizabeth's sister Mary which may be why you're not certain of his wife's name. He was the first president of the Iowa Agricultural Society, and an original trustee of the Iowa Agricultural College which is now Iowa State University. He was also a delegate to the second Iowa Constitutional Convention.
His father, Timothy Day, Sr. was married to Sarah Crane. I suspect that Sarah Crane is descended from Jasper Crane that was one of the first English settlers of New Jersey, but I have not filled in all of the links yet.
Timothy Day, Sr.'s parents were Daniel Day, Jr. and Mary Meeker. Mary Meeker's father, Captain Timothy Meeker, Sr. was a second cousin of George Washington. Mary's great great grandfather was Colonel William Ball, who was also George Washington's great grandfather.
I haven't found much concrete information about Daniel Day, Sr. His wife's name is believed to be Mary, but I haven't found her maiden name. Part of the confusion arises due to apparent errors in an 1851 book by John Littell about the first settlers of the Passaic Valley in New Jersey. He attributes the 12 children of Daniel Day, Sr. to Jonathan Day.
Information that I consider more reliable indicates that Daniel Day, Sr.'s parents were Paul Day and Phebe Brown. I haven't found any original source material that lists all of Paul Day's children.
Paul Day was the son of George Day and Mary Riggs. George Day was the first of this Day family in North America. Sources I've seen claim that the family came from Wales and was named Dee. The first of the Riggs to arrive in North America's Massachusett's Bay Colony was Edward Riggs in 1633.
I have pictures of Timothy Day, Jr. and Elizabeth Edwards.
