The John M.(McCormick) Whitaker found in the 1880 California census is indeed the same person. He moved to California after 20 years of public service as a legislator and land commissioner of the State of Iowa. He was a delegate to the original Iowa State Constitutional Convention, and he chose the site of the Iowa Agricultural College which is now Iowa State University.

The remains of the dairy he operated in San Luis Obispo County, California are now part of the San Simeon State Park.

Any of his descendants seeking additional information or anyone that has information on the family of his wife (Jane Phillips) is welcome to contact me.
