Kim - The 1832 Pioneer Assoc of Van Buren County Iowa (organized 1871 to 1941) book - does list a Thomas Rankin and an Amanda (Bower / Bonner) Rankin as arriving in Van Buren County around April 1, 1842 (both born in Ohio). The first names of these people do not exactly match yours, but if you think the info is helpful - let me know. I have additional details to provide. (By the way, I am not researching this surname; just thought I would check the book after I saw your posting.)
