Mary - I don't have time to do research for other individuals but instead spend my time putting useful info on line to assist others in their research. But my curiosity still gets aroused once in a while too.

I found your Alexander McLees listed in the 1850 census for Van Buren county living in Farmington Twp. and am wondering if this is where you got the lead on his being a "Lawyer". In looking at that census image online, my thought is that is profession is shown as a "Sawyer". (English from the occupation "sawer - one who cut timber into boards or slates")

Comparing the first name of his profession with the "L" in McLees. I think one is an "L" and the other an "S". When in doubt on a letter like this, I always look for other "L's" and "S's" on a page or nearby census page. There are several examples to compare on this same page with your ancestor.

I hope someone here can give you leads on this family but I did want to toss out this thought as well.
