The neighbor was Branson's father, Jesse (also listed in earlier Van Buren census, possibly as Jame J. Sutton.) Branson was the oldest son, with wife Keziah Branson. Nancy Brown may have been the daugher of Amos A. Brown, Sr. The Browns, Suttons came from Tazewell County, Illinois before settling in Des Moines (early county prior to Van Buren Co. establishment.) By 1850, Jesse had married Rhoda Young Barker. Other Suttons in the area are Absalom and Lewis.
Jesse ran a trading post/mercantile in Iowaville and farmed. He was also an early Justice of the Peace, and Indian trader. Branson eventually went to California.
