Mark,
I have been passing your posts on to my brother who is the one working on the book about the 5th Iowa. He writes:
"There are 11 Peter Barkers in the NARA data base; 2 in Wisc. units; 1 each in Mass., N.J., N.Y., and Ohio; 4 in the U.S. Colored Troops and one in the 36th Iowa.
Peter Barker from the 36th Iowa enlisted in Aug. 1862 from Van Buren County and was mustered out in Aug. 1865 in Arkansas. He was 27 at enlistment.
The 36th Iowa also lists a George W. Barker who was rejected for enlistment in Oct. 1862. Maybe he's also related.
The 36th Iowa Infantry was mustered in Oct. 1862 and served along the Mississippi River and in Arkansas for the rest of the war."
Hope that helps!
