Jesse Sutton and "Stumptown"

SUTTON, BAKER, BARKER, HOLCOMB

I have received information from a relative that Jesse Sutton was an early trader on the Des Moines River. In History of Van Buren Co., Vol. 27, pg.363 it states that Jesse Sutton was appointed an early Justice of the Peace. On page 1502-503 talks about the town of Portland where Jess Sutton kept the first store. Family stories tell of owning a store, in a town known as Stumptown. Other family stories tell of Chief Black Hawk being a frequent guest to dinner. Jesse married Rhoda Young Barger in 1842 in Portland. Does anyone know of early Van Buren County Histories which might verify any of this? Jesse Sutton's will lists the contents of his estate, which includes debts owed at the trading post by numerous early settlers. A copy of the will and estate settlement lists the names of Baker, Barker, Lewis Sutton, Holcomb.
