DAVID J. DODDS
D. J. Dodds, one of the highly respected citizens of Mt. Pleasant, died at his home there Monday, November 30, after weeks of suffering from cancer of the stomach.
Mr. Dodds was proprietor of the Fair store on Main St., Mt. Pleasant, and this store is now managed by his son, Frank.
Mr. Dodds was born Oct. 17, 1843, at Mt. Vernon, Illinois. In 1850 the Dodds family moved to Iowa and settled six miles north of Bonaparte.
In 1865 he married Miss Julia Ann McDow and to this union were born two daughters, May and Rose. His wife died Sept. 15, 1882 and on Sept. 18, 1883 he married Miss Jennie Humphryes at Pella, Iowa. To this union were born three children; Frank, Sybil and Ed. All of the children live in Mt. Pleasant.
They moved from the farm to Mt. Pleasant in 1895 and have since made their home there.
Mr. Dodds was a strong member of the Baptist church and well liked by all.
Mr. Dodds leaves also four brothers and three sisters: Harvey Dodds of Ottawa, Kansas; John Dodds of Bonaparte; Charles Dodds of Farmington; James Dodds of Kansas City; Nora Sayer of Labelle, Mo., Eliza Tade of Sacramento, Cal.; Ellen Proper of Des Moines; another brother died in infancy and a sister living in Pennsylvania died five weeks ago.
Funeral services were held from the Harrisburg Baptist Church, Rev. Conney of Kahoka officiating and deceased was interred in the Vale cemetery.
