OBITUARY SKETCH.H. K. Kean, a former resident of Bonaparte and a brother of Joseph A. Kean, died at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. W. Cox in Pella, Iowa, on Tuesday, December 15, 1903, aged 84 years, 5 months and 5 days.
He was one of the men to whom the present generation are indebted for the present christian civilization in this country. He was born in Beaver county, Pennsylvania, July 10, 1819, and moved with his father's family to Wayne county, Ohio, in 1824, and from there to Saint Joseph county, Michigan in 1836 and resided there until 1840. In that year he came to the Territory of Iowa and located at Bonaparte.
Mr. Kean was married to Miss Sarah Paschal at a home three miles below Farmington, Iowa, March 21, 1844. To their union four children were born: three sons and one daughter. The two first born died in infancy. One son and the daughter grew to mature years.
He united with the Bonaparte Baptist church in 1852 under the pastorate of Rev. E. O. Town and remained a member until his death, 51 years. 49 years of that time he served in the capacity of Deacon.
In the fall of 1860 he moved to Eddyville, Iowa, where he resided 2 years and 6 months. In the fall of 1862 he moved to Pella, Iowa, where he has resided continuously. He was one of the charter members of the Baptist church in Pella, it having been organized in 1863 in his own dwelling house.
On Friday, April 17, 1891, the daughter, Maggie, departed this life at their home in Pella, and on the 22nd day of the very same month and year his wife died. The adopted son, Ralph W., resides in Chicago.
The funeral took place from the Baptist church in Pella, Iowa, on Wednesday, December 16, 1903.
