ELIZABETH MEEK WOODS

Mrs. Elizabeth Woods, widow of the late Alexander H. Woods of Harrisburg township, died Tuesday morning after a long illness. Her age was 88 years and two months.

Elizabeth Meek Woods was a daughter of William and Elizabeth Meek and a sister of Robert Meek, Isaiah Meek and Joseph Meek, of Bonaparte, now deceased. She was born at Constantine, Mich., and was united in marriage to Alexander H. Woods in 1834. She and her husband came to Iowa and Van Buren county with the Meek family in the summer of 1837. Her husband preempted 160 acres of land in Harrisburg township, and erected a cabin and they began life in true pioneer fashion. At Mr. Wood's death a few years since he was the owner of 765 acres of land in one body, and was the wealthiest man in the township.

Mrs. Woods was the mother of 11 children, seven of whom are still living, namely, William V., who resides in California, Robert M., who resides in Vernon township, and Mrs. Lewis DeHart of St. Louis, Mrs. Glasscock of Harrisburg township, Mrs. Jacob Leffler, Mrs. H. B. Edmondson, and Mrs. Jessie F. Davis.

Mrs. Woods was the oldest of the family of William and Elizabeth Meek, and out lived all of them. she was universally respected and esteemed.
