Augustus Whitlock.

Augustus Whitlock, son of Frederick and Caroline Whitlock, was born in Germany Feb. 2, 1829. He came with his parents to America in 1837 when he was eight years old and settled in Farmington township, Van Buren county, Iowa. There he resided until he was twenty one years old when he crossed the plains to California where he remained four years.

He was married to Miss Sarah M. Beck Sept. 24, 1854, with whom he lived nearly fifty-two years. They located on a farm in Harrisburg township, Van Buren county, the year of their marriage and resided there until 1868. On Nov. 24 of that year they moved to Bonaparte where they resided continuously until his death, and where he has been engaged in business.

Eight children were born to their union – five daughters and three sons – and of these the following preceded their father in death: -- Caroline Catherine, Mary Helen, and Ida Alice. He leaves to mourn for him his companion, three sons, George F. and Wichita, Kansas, William H. and John B. of Bonaparte, two daughters, Mrs. Anna A. Cates of Bonaparte and Mrs. Lottie R. Eddy of Farmington; one sister, Mrs. Caroline Korthage of Kansas City, Mo., and one brother, Henry Whitlock, of Farmington. There are also five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He died in Bonaparte, Iowa, July 23, 1906, aged seventy-seven years, five months, and one day.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 10 o’clock at the grave in the Bonaparte cemetery. It was at first planned to have services at the late residence but because of the serious illness of a daughter, Mrs. Jas. Eddy, it was impossible to hold the service there. Rev. Barber of Unionville, Iowa, conducted the service.

Another of the pioneer corps of Iowa’s good citizens has passed away. A people who came to the west that they might the better provide for themselves and families, but who builded [sic] better than they knew.

The father of A. Whitlock was probably the first miller in southern Iowa, his mill having been erected in Farmington township.

Mr. Whitlock was a successful businessman and at the time of his death owned much real estate in and near Bonaparte. He has been engaged in the selling of farm implements, stoves, etc. for many years on the corner of Second and Bridge streets at Bonaparte. It is understood that he left no will.
