HAZEN W. BLACKBURN 13 July 1978 Rec. Rep.
Hazen W. Blackburn, son of Walter and Tensa Cox Blackburn, was born October 27, 1901, near Keosauqua, and departed this life Thursday, July 6, 1978 at Ottumwa Hospital at the age of 76.
On March 3, 1921, he married Ve Lazenby, who remains to cherish his memory. Also surviving are a brother, Hugh Blackburn of Keosauqua, niece and nephews, other relatives and many friends. His parents and a brother Clifford preceded him in death.
Hazen and Ve operated a service station in Keosauqua for many years. For a number of years they also operated a roller skating rink above their station, and later were the owners of Blackburn Riverside Park.
Hazen was a member of Center Chapel United Methodist Church and active in numerous civic endeavors. He served several years on the Keosauqua town Council. Was active in the Sheep Empire Association and the Van Buren County Fair, had been a member of the board of Keosauqua Light and Power Co., and was presently a member of the Van Buren Foundation Board. In 1969 he was chosen as Keosauqua's Outstanding Citizen.
A devoted husband, a good neighbor, a good citizen and friend, he will be remembered as one who did his part to make his community a better place in which to live.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 8, 1978 at 2 p.m. at the Center Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Cornish, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Harold Jamison was the soloist accompanied by Mr. John Cornish. Pallbearers were Lester Matheson, John A. Manning, LeRoy Wright, Carl Archibald, Donald Dietzman, and Richard Lytle. Interment was in Center Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home. A memorial was established for the Center Chapel Church.
