PASSED FROM EARTH.
After a Long Illness, Mrs. W. E. Smith
Departs This Life.

When the "King of Shadows" invades a pleasant home and beckons to himself one of the members of the household, it is, indeed, passing sad; but immeasurably sadder does such a visit appear when the one taken is the wife and mother. Such was the case last Thursday morning, when, after a long and wearying illness of several months, the lamp of life of Mrs. W. E. Smith went out forever.

No words that we could write would add to the high regard in which this good woman was held by relatives, neighbors and acquaintances. She will be sadly missed by all, and most especially in the home to which she was devotedly attached.

[Mary S. Duer was born in Fletcher, Miami Co., Ohio, Sept. 3rd, 1851, and died in Bonaparte, Iowa, May 27, 1897, aged 45 years, 8 months and 24 days.

During her early childhood her parents moved to Iowa. She was married to Wallace E. Smith, in Bonaparte, Iowa, May 5, 1872. Five children came to bless this union, of whom four are left with their father, two sisters and numerous other friends to mourn her loss.]

The funeral services occurred from her late home last Sunday, at 2 o'clock p.m., and was conducted by Rev. A. E. Thornley, of Bentonsport, assisted by Rev. W. H. Scofield, of Bonaparte, and Rev. C. W. Wilson, of Martinsburg, Iowa. A most beautiful collection of flowers was tendered by the friends and neighbors and the Rathbone Sisters, of which Mrs. Smith was a member.
