John B. Grammar was born in Indiana, [Tuesday] November 10th, 1835 and died at his late home in Birmingham, Iowa [Wednesday] December 13th, 1916.

He came to Iowa in the year 1855, and settled in Van Buren County. He lived for a number of years in Jefferson County, Iowa

He was united in marriage to Miss Naomi (a?) Taylor, [Sunday] May 19, 1867. To this union were born eight children, four of whom preceded him in death.

He was converted to God in the fall of 1858, and united with the Baptist church. Later, in 1888, he united with the Free Methodist church, and remained a faithful and consistent Christian until death. At different times to the writer he gave clear evidence of his being ready to meet his Master. Brother Grammar was a good man.

When the Civil War broke out he answered to the call of his country in 1862, and served faithfully for three years. He enlisted in Co. H, Fifth Iowa Infantry.
