OBITUARIES

S. E. (TOM) WELLBORN

Stacy E. (Tom) Wellborn, was born January 20, 1896 in Cantril, Iowa. He passed away at the Van Buren County Memorial Hospital at Keosauqua, Iowa on June 27, 1974 at the age of 78 years, five months and seven days. Richard and Rosa Wellborn, his parents, six brothers, five sisters and a grandson preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Ferol, four sons and their wives; Bert and Martha of Donnellson, Iowa, Beryl and Dorothy of Grinnell, Iowa, Paul and Carolyn of New Orleans, La. and Max and Carolyn of Cantril; seven grandchildren, a sister, Pauline Snyder of St. Louis, Mo., several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

He grew to manhood in Cantril and lived most of his life in this area. He and Ferol would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on November 16, having been united in marriage in the Methodist Parsonage at Memphis, Mo. on November 16, 1921.

Tom and Ferol farmed on this area from 1921 until 1931. They established Wellborn's Grocery in Azen, Mo. in October 1931 and lived there until 1936, at which time they moved to Cantril and with the exception of two years, operated a grocery store from 1936 to 1961, retiring in June.

Tom served his country in France during World War I. He was a member of the Cantril Methodist Church. He was serving his 33rd consecutive year on the Van Buren County Commission of Veteran's Affairs. He was a member of Apollo Lodge, AF&AM No. 461, Order of the Eastern Star No. 437, Robert E. Tadlock Post of the American Legion; a member of Veterans of World War I Barracks at Keosauqua and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Memphis, Mo. No. 4958.

During his active years, he served as a member of the Town Council of Cantril, he was on the Official Board of the United Methodist Church, Master of the Masonic Lodge, Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star, and local and County Commander of the American Legion.

A loving and faithful husband and father, Community worker and friend. Tom's memory is a gift to all who knew him.
