Hazel Sheets Alexander

Hazel Mae Alexander, 85, of Fort Madison, (Iowa) formerly of Keosauqua, died Thursday, July 25,1996 at Fort Madison Health Care Center.

She was born Oct 4, 1910, near Mount Sterling to Henry and Rosabel Watkins Sheets. On Sept. 22,1934, she married Gene Alexander at Keokuk. They lived in Scotland County, Mo., about seven years, then made their home in Van Buren County, Iowa, where they farmed until 1963. In the 1950s she worked as a cook and waitress at Starlight Motel Cafe in Cantril, Bonaparte Sale Barn and Bridge Cafe in Farmington. She and Gene owned and operated the Goodie Garden Cafe in Keosauqua from 1961 to 1965. She then supervised the food service department at Van Buren Community School until her retirement in 1977. She was also a school bus driver and moved to Fort Madison in 1982.

She was a member of Center Chapel United Methodist Church, rural Keosauqua.

Survivors include sons, Edgar Leon Alexander and his wife, Carolyn of Midway, Geogia, and Donald and his wife, Sheila of Fort Madison; daughter, Connie Street and her husband, Keith of Wapello, grandchildren, Russell Alexander of Vancouver, Washington, Leona Alexander of Rich­mond, Va., Wythe Alexander in Germany, Kim Oestreich of Davenport, Daniel Alexander of Mount Pleasant, Alan Dobert of Muscatine and Beth Rippenkroeger of Nashua; nieces, Wanda Ryner of Monmouth, Ill., who had lived in the Alexander home, and Rosalie Davis of Cameron, Ill, eight great-grandchildren and numer­ous step great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Feb. 24,1981, and two brothers, Edgar nd Leonard Sheets.

The family hosted a cel­bration of her life Saturday, July 7,1996 at the home of her son, Donald at Fort Madison.

Funeral services were held at 1 a.m. Monday, July 29,1996 at Center Chapel United Meth­odist Church southeast of Keosauqua, Rev. Samuel Subramanian officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to her church.
