H. Donald Smith

H. Donald Smith, son of Harold and Vergill Roberts Smith, was born June 8, 1914 at Cantril and died the afternoon of Sunday, March 18, 1990 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, at the age of 75.

Don graduated from Cantril High School, attended Chillicothe Business School and the University of Iowa and graduated from North-west Institute of Medical Technicians, Minneapolis, Minn. in 11935.

He was employed at Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines, prior to taking charge of the medical laboratory at Des Moines Veterans Hospital, where he was employed for many years, including the period of World War II. He later worked at Firestone Laboratories and operated his own medical laboratory with a partner in Des Moines. Later with a partner he owned and operated Acme Supplyl(err) on East 14th St., Des Moines. He sold out to his partner and moved to the Cantril Farm in 1963. He farmed and enjoyed traveling. In recent years, though in failing health he enjoyed his family and their activities, and with his wife divided their time between their homes at Cantril and Fairfield Bay, Arkansas.

Don married Lou Ella Jane Hustead April 10, 1937 in Des Moines. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1987.

Survivors in addition to his wife and two daughters, Sherry Kleveter and her husband, David, Omaha, Nebraska and Linda Sharp and her husband, Jack, Cantril, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

He was a Methodist.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 31, 1990 at 1:30 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, with Rev. Gerald Caughron officiating. Interment was in the family mausoleum in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril. Memorials were established for the Parkinson's Foundation and Cantril Christian Church.
