Edith W. Smith
Edith W. Smith, 89, of Fairfield, died at 5:20 a.m. today, Oct. 24, 1990, at Jefferson County Hospital.
The service is tentatively set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Naomi Lock officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery at Richland. Open visitation begins at Friday noon at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to Woolson Friends Church south of Richland and Stockport Library.
Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 12, 1901, in Veo, Jefferson County, the daughter of W.O. and Effie Jones Allen. She graduated from Pleasant Plain High School and attended Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa, each for a year. She married Gilbert H. Smith June 2, 1923, at Veo. A resident of Van Buren and Jefferson counties for most of her life, she was a home economics teacher and a homemaker. She was a member of Woolson Friends Church and a former member of LLG Club at Stockport.
Surviving are her husband of Fairfield; two daughters, Joan Jones of Minneapolis, Berna Yourd of Mercer, Pa.; a son, Charles E. of Redwood, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a sister, Dorothy Eckels of Aplington. A brother, Don Allen and a sister, Faye Fleig, preceded her in death.
