Ethel L. Harward, daughter of Grant and Amy Sedore Thomas, was born March 18, 1907 in Eldon and died early the morning of Friday, March 2, 1990 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua, at the age of 82.
She married Hollis Harward June 26, 1929 in Ottumwa.
She graduated from Eldon High School and Iowa Success School in Ottumwa, and was employed in the former Farmers & Merchants Bank and First National Bank and the Post Office, all in Eldon. She was office manager for Douds Stone, INc. for 21 years, retiring in 1967. She and her husband farmed near Floris and Bloomfield and moved to their present farm south of Douds in 1940.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Fairfield and had been a church youth leader.
Surviving are her husband, a daughter, Yvonne Johnson, West Des Moines, a son, Bob and his wife, Mary, Fairfield, seven grandchildren and eight grandchildren. Also surviving are six brothers, Wilbur Thomas, New Bloomfield, Mo., Noah Thomas, Woodale, Illinois and Albert Thomas, Bloomfield, Eldon, three sisters, Mae Thomas, Fairfield, Gertrude Holcomb, Packwood, and Lucille Kauzlarich, Centerville, other relatives and friends. Two infant siblings preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 5, 1990, at 10:30 a.m. in Christ United Methodist Church, Douds, with Robert Gates officiating. Interment was in Leando Cemetery. A memorial was established for the Gideons International. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home.
